Kurdistan People's Defence Forces

Human existence gains meaning through its own language, culture, and standards. If the aim of freedom is present in people's consciousness and they fight for it, life becomes more beautiful still.

Those who long for a free life have always fought to protect that beautiful life. For hundreds of years, a beautiful life has been taken from the Kurdish people, and violence and darkness imposed upon them. The Kurd who was told, 'You do not exist; you have no identity,' and was constantly confronted with displacement, overcame that era with the Freedom Movement. From now on, young people whose eyes are open and who are aware of themselves will not accept the laws imposed upon them and will leave them behind. Kemal Dewran too breaks the bonds of the system and walks toward a beautiful life.

Hızır Turan, known in the movement as Kemal Dewran, was born in Colemêrg. His family belongs to the Şivişkî tribe and has itself given martyrs. Kemal was therefore raised in a culture of protecting Kurdish identity and patriotism. His family became acquainted with the Freedom Movement in earlier years; members of his family fought heroically for freedom, and some reached martyrdom. These martyrdoms created a different feeling in Kemal's childhood. As he grew, he was not deprived of the value of life. The system of assimilation and annihilation had a profound impact on his family, as on every Kurdish family. His uncle Kemal Kato's martyrdom at the hands of the Turkish State in Geliyê Tiyarê deeply affected him. To follow in his footsteps, he joined the guerrilla ranks in 2014 and took the name Kemal Dewran. He assumed his martyred uncle's name and thus took an important step toward becoming a revolutionary.

Kemal's contradictions were deep, and at one point he entered into an effort to resolve them. When he analyzed his personality and questioned himself, he became aware of himself and his love of life increased. The life and struggle of Guerrilla Kemal began here. As his search for freedom grew, he participated wholeheartedly and became one of the heroes who walked in the footsteps of truth.

Guerrilla Kemal researched deeply and analyzed very well Leader APO's words: 'We are hidden at the beginning of history, and history is hidden in our present day.' His questioning developed on this basis, and he became a great-hearted guerrilla of his people. Although Dewran was still new to the mountains, his desire and curiosity were great. He moved step by step through the mountain areas and taught himself everything so that he could carry out great work under difficult conditions.

Guerrilla Kemal had an enthusiastic personality; his strength and morale were very high. He was a gallant and intelligent young man who had not drifted away from his Kurdish culture and always joined life with that spirit. After learning his great history, he thought on a grand scale and took his steps accordingly. In every step, he upheld the standards and principles of life. He thus became the truest example for his comrades.

After completing his basic training, Kemal wanted with great desire to move into the fields of practice. He wanted to become an intelligent and expert fighter, to become his people's power of revenge. His constant aim was to liberate his people from oppression. While Kemal lived with this anger, the war and attacks of ISIS gangs against the people of Şengal intensified. An immoral assault was carried out against them. No person of conscience could restrain themselves and merely watch. Kemal strove with all his strength to reach Şengal and prepared himself.

Kemal's wish and proposal were accepted, and he moved with his comrades into the field of war and combat. For Kemal, this war would be both a beginning and an important accumulation of experience.

He possessed great determination. Because he entered battle with immense anger, he also acquired the power to act in combat. When Kemal saw the gangs' savage attacks, his anger grew and he carried out effective actions. In this war, he learned tactics and the art of war; he endured great hardship but never stopped. He saw the people's pain and drew the anger of revenge from it. To become a defender of the people of Şengal, he warmly embraced women and children and rescued them from those gangs.

Whenever a guerrilla defends the people and rescues them from the occupiers, it is a very great victory. A people constantly subjected to massacres and whose city was repeatedly plundered by oppressors had been deprived of a beautiful life. Guerrilla Kemal always tried to stop this war so that the people of Şengal could live a peaceful life. When he saw the people's strength and will and the fighters' struggle, a spirit of unity formed within him. Freedom guerrillas from all four parts of Kurdistan turned toward Şengal and rescued the people there from the gangs.

After the liberation of Şengal city, Guerrilla Kemal turned with great longing toward the free mountains of Kurdistan. He returned to the cliffs where he had gained his identity and recalled those memories moment by moment. Because he returned to the mountains with the spirit of victory, great strength and will formed within him. Kemal gained self-confidence in that war, and this accumulation became a sound foundation for his struggle. On this basis, after returning, he asked this time to head toward the northern areas. Guerrilla Kemal trusted his practice. Through his experiences, he achieved a successful practice and fulfilled his revolutionary duty without deficiency. His wish to go to the North was therefore accepted, and he became one of the travelers walking toward those mountains.

Guerrilla Kemal set out toward the northern area, beginning his journey with a long march. He would go to Serhat. He set out toward his dream and purpose and headed toward the great struggle. In the Serhat area, he expanded further upon what he had learned. Within the region, he moved to Erzurum, where he would learn new styles and tactics under field conditions. Living in these areas requires great strength and a will of steel, for they have many difficulties as well as beauties. On this basis, Kemal took courageous steps at the beginning of his practice and adapted very quickly to the existing conditions.

Kemal stayed in Erzurum for a very short time, yet lived it fully. In those mountains he breathed in freedom and benefited from the historical legacy where hundreds of heroes had fought. He was aware of the enemy's occupation, and therefore took measures with great care while carrying out his practice in the region. He constantly moved through that terrain and viewed it strategically to develop his command. Thus, when Guerrilla Kemal acquired the power of action, he played a historic role and became the defender of those mountains.

In areas where practice is difficult, the values of life become still greater. When freedom guerrillas conduct practice in those mountains with the fewest means, they make spiritual strength and the values of life still more meaningful. Guerrilla Kemal continued his development from his first practice in Şengal until reaching the Erzurum area. Step by step, he paid the price until his last breath and took the line of the Egîds as his foundation. With his youthful energy, he brought color among his comrades and remained in their hearts and minds as an energy that would never disappear.

In Northern Kurdistan, the enemy continued its attacks and brutality in every form, living with the fear that the guerrillas would again deal it heavy blows. It therefore went after the guerrillas by every method, conducting operations in guerrilla areas both by land and with warplanes. With their strength and conviction, the guerrillas carried out effective actions amid these severe attacks. Because the guerrilla forces also fulfilled their active roles and duties in this area, the enemy launched operations there. It surrounded every place and heavily bombarded the area with all its technology. Amid these attacks, on April 6, 2018, in Bazîd, Guerrilla Kemal reached martyrdom together with two comrades in an air strike.

With a self-sacrificing spirit, Martyr Kemal carried on life and the struggle for existence until his final breath. To uphold his history, he acted in every duty with discipline and the principles of life. As a gallant young man, the adventure of his life in these mountains became part of the history of the Kurdish people. Kemal's personality will always remain in people's minds as a valiant son of his people.
